Sitara Teachers’ Institute (STI) Sitara is a professional development school. Both students and teachers are learning all the time. Our motto is “Teaching for Understanding”. That means we must educate our teachers in the most up to date methods of pedagogy. The Institute was started in 2012 by director, Sommieh Flower, a veteran educator from the USA. Asma Sayyam, senior section principal, and a graduate of STI, expanded the Institute’s work through computer courses and classes in educational methodology, all free of charge to the teachers. Additionally, guest lecturers in project based learning, early childhood education, English, phonics and Tajweed are brought in on a regular basis to work with teachers.
That first year there were 20 children. They came wide-eyed into the school room and saw the whiteboard, the desks, the crayons, pencils and books. They began with an undisciplined eagerness that left me and their teachers exhausted at the end of the day, but it was the good kind of exhaustion that comes from doing something worthwhile.
With Allah’s help and blessings, the school has grown from its humble beginnings. We now have a fully functional Science Lab, Library and Computer Center on campus and have added separate girls’ and boys’ high school programs to our early childhood and elementary school campus. In 2018 we initiated the Sitara Mother Child Center to provide basic education to the neediest families in our town. About 70 children and women attend that program
These wonderful education and community development programs are under the umbrella of Sitara Trust, a registered trust in Islamabad, Pakistan.
